In scenes in films, as in a restaurant where there are people in the background talking to each other.?

Are they carrying on a normal conversation, or just miming words ?

Don't know, i have often wondered that myself. I would think they would be actually talking about something.

They carry on regular, unscripted conversations as many are not trained actors and it's easier to just let them talk to get a natural look.

I know in older films, there were a select few words that extras were to say quietly over and over to each other. The only one I remember is 'watermelon.'
