I am writing a paper for Political Science and I can't seem to figure out who stated that we must exchange some liberties to the government in order to receive protection for our other rights. Could anyone please help?

The quote is more to this effect:

"Those who would sacrafice a little bit of liberty for a little bit of security deserve neither and will loose both."

-Benjamin Franklin

The problem is that Liberals would have you believe its an either security or liberty proposition. They would rather see thousands of innocent Americans dead than take the steps needed to keep them safe from the savages that want to kill them. I have not seen one American deprived of his liberty without due process. The basic duty of the national government is to provide for the common defense, to bad liberals have a problem with that clause. They prefer to defend the rights of terrorists than the lives of innocent people.

I'll quote from Thomas Jefferson for my answer.

A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless
one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is
not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-
preservation,of saving our country when in danger,
are of a higher obligation.

To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to
written law would be to lose the law itself,
with life liberty, property and all those who are
enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing
the end to the means.

by Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), U.S. president.
Letter, 20 Sept. 1810

I have scoured the Quotation URLs and could find no citation that expresses such offensiveness.

As noted by others,Ben Franklin's citation is world famous .

I will need to look to the war mongering neo-conservatives from Bush to Cheney to Rumsfeld to Ashcroft and Gonzales for a quotation that would support such a vile offensive premise for these are the monumentally immoral perpetrators of crimes against humanity that has brought us all an ILLEGAL war of choice all based upon a pack of filthy lies that has seen the slaughter of over 400,000 innocent Iraqi civilians.

To this truly evil people GIVING UP THE TRUTH AND LIBERTIES for their FEAR/WAR MONGERING AGENDA is the CHRISTIAN THING TO DO.

Benjamin Franklin is widely credited with saying the exact opposite. That those who would exchange freedom for safety deserve neither.

I beleive Dick Cheney may have said something to that account.

Too bad no one took Ben Franklin's famous quote to heart.
