I like it pronounced "Ecks a vier"
I know purists insist is it pronounced "Zavier"

However, the professor from Xmen (we're such geeks, we know), is pronounced with the "X" sound instead of "Z" as well as Xavier University.

Questions:

1. When you first read it, did you pronounce it with a "Ecks/X" or "Z" sound?

2. Do you think we'd be condemning our son to a life of either correcting people or having his name pronouced wrong if we named him this?

Thanks.

I'd pronounce it with a z. However if it is pronounced with a "z" or "x" it will be the same because he would think that the "z" is just a shorter version of the "x". Good luck. I like the name though. Nice choice.

I pronounce it "Ecks a vier" but personally like the sound of "Zavier" a whole lot better. It's a tough name...but a good name - Just stick to one pronounciation and keep it that way...he'll be fine - there are a lot of worse names you could give him!!

I pronounce it with the Z sound.

I think most people will pronounce it with the Z sound, but maybe your son will feel either pronunciation is acceptable
and won't feel he has to correct anyone.

It is a great name. Best of luck!

Zavier is correct - like xylophone is also said with a z. The French say Ks - a- vee- ay.

I have to admit that I hear it pronounced like Hahv-ee-air a lot more where I live. Apparently, it is a fairly popular name in Hispanic families.

I thought it was with the Ecks sound. I think that because its spelled with an X not a Z

I see it, and pronounce it the way YOU prefer it. I think any cool names end up mispronounced occasionally, but I think MOST people will see it the way you do, and the others, who may be a little snobbier, may NEED to get corrected once in a while anyway!

I definitely read it as Ecks/X.. NOT the Z sound..
I love that name and think it's really unique.. I also LOVE the musician Xavier Rudd.. he's from Australia.. ;) you should look into him.
He may have to correct some people while growing up, but I think the name Xavier is worth it.. that's my opinion.. ;)
