I have acquired a used '98 Ford Ranger pick-up and after getting the registration and tags all straight, I go to drive it and the engine won't start! Haha...So I borrowed a battery charger, put some gas in it b/c I know it has been sitting for awhile with no fuel. It's charging up right now, I want to know before I cause a problem, CAN I START THE ENGINE (OR TRY TO) WHILE IT'S CHARGING? I don't want to ruin anything or hurt myself! Thanks, quick replies appreciated!

You can start it, but I would remove the charger once it starts. Otherwise you effectively have the external charger charging the battery, as well as the truck's alternator. That might overload the battery or the charger at that point.

A car battery charger can charge at different amp settings. If the battery was completely depleted, just trickle-charge it at the lowest possible setting on the charger. Just to play it safe, wait until the battery is fully charged before putting it back in the car. It may take a little longer, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Sure, you aren't going to hurt anything. Accually if it will start just let it run for a little while and the alternator will charge the battery for you. As long as the alternator is still good.

Chances are that trying to start will blow the battery charger.
A better solution is to use another battery as a booster.
The quickest way is with booster cables from another car.
But you need to connect them in the right sequence.
Connect positive to positive, then ground to ground.
