I've been to Menin gate. It was such an emotional experience and really makes you think about all the people who have died to make our country what it is today. The fallen will never be forgotten.

Totally chilling I agree, especially when you realise the
average age of the boys is 19.
Should be a required school visit, then we wouldn't get all the
silly questions about the relevance of poppies on this site.
Have you been to the landing beaches in France and to the museum at Arromanche, We went last year, I sobbed for an hour
when I realised what those men were up against. We also went
to Pegasus Bridge and stood by where the first man on the bridge
was killed. It gave me goosebumps.

Only once i remember standing there looking at the sheer amount of names and feeling very saddened by the massive amount of lives lost for pointless reasons. I also visted several cemeteries which are again vast. I was also saddened to visit a german cemetery whilst in belguim where instaed of individual graves with headstones on there is just one mass grave filled with thousands of people, those people were doing their duty just the same as our people were and i'm sure many of them didn't want to be there either.
I have also visited the place where a battle was fought you stand in the trench and can see the other side.

I've been to both the Menin Gate and Theipval.
Remember, the huge number of names on these two monuments record the poor guys that haven't got a grave, blown to bits, etc.
Add to that the equally huge number of guys that do have graves, including my Grandfather, and you have an immense and obscene loss of life.
We've got no idea how bloody awful it was there .......

I have been to the Somme and it was a truly chilling feeling standing on the fields that saw one of the most tragic losses of life in history. There was something untangible in the air.
It inspired me to read up on the first world war.
Remembrance is respect.

I have been to many WW1 sites. They all make me feel very small and make me cry. For people who have never been there; it is impossible to imagine the size of the places and the strange atmosphere that surround them.
Great question by the way.

No, but I saw a burial site on the outskirts of San Francisco for the fallen in WW2. Hundreds of white crosses. It made me cry. Such a waste especially when we look at the world they fought for now.
