My daughter and I were having a discussion this weekend and she said according to the Mayan Calendar that the world will cease to exist on December 21, 2012. Evidentally, everything that they have predicted has came true thus far.

Yes, they were highly accurate in a lot of their predictions.

On December 21, 2012 their calendar ends, and a "new beginning" will arrive. Some people that's the end of the world, but who knows. Maybe a new era.

It's pretty freaky thinking about it since it's going to happen in our lifetime.

this is a mistake which i'm going to try and clear up for you
their calendar was based on 360 day years not 365 day years,
they kept a count known as the long count that ended after so many days (it's in the millions)
when the long count reached the specific number the calendar ended, however the actual date that the calendar ends on is in 2080 not 12/21/12 that date comes from dividing by 365 not 360.
also there is a european fascination with the number 12 because it is the last named number (ie it is not twoteen)
For what it's worth though, the believers of this prophecy believe that the earth will cross a galactic belt in the universe and conciousness will change and the world will become a better place not that the world will end, the world as we know it maybe but not a physical destruction armageddon end.

FYI the scientists are predicting severe solar flares in 2012 that may knock out cell phones and other communications

The Mayans Calendar, which is not predicting the end of the world in 2012, but the start of a new era on December 21st, 2012. The year 2012 marks the end of the "Great Cycle." When it came to mathematics, time and calendars, the Maya were geniuses. Believing that time repeated itself in cycles.

According to the Mayan Calendar December 21, 2012 marks the beginning of a new era in the development of man. It marks a transition from where mankind has a consciousness, to a higher level where mankind is consciousness.

I just recently watched a show about this on YouTube.com I believe it was recorded from the history channel. Anyway, there is lots of info on the Mayans on youtube. And yes, it does say that something will happen that will change the world as we know it. If you have time, do a search for some clips on youtube. You and your daughter will be amazed at the info out there. I was a little frazzled for a few days after ... really interesting, sort of freaky stuff.

Wel, there are a few dates, Dec 21 or 23 or 12 of 2012. I think that it is silly to assume that the wrold is going to end just because of this calandar. I thought the world was going to end on the start of 2000. lol. They have been correct on alot of things depending on how you interpet what they predicted. (If I said that you are going to have a bad day, some time with in the next 5 years, and on that day you would stump your toe, it will happen oneday because you will be looking for it, and your mind will go right back to my prediction.

To the best of my knowledge, they didn't leave any verifiable predictions and their calender just ends at the end of one of their ages. Many people jump to the conclusion that this means that the world will end then, but there is no reason to believe that the Mayans thought that. You should also realize that they did not predict the end of their society/civilization, so they should not be considered creditable prophets.

Well, technically that's where it ends. "Scholars" have concluded that it means that that's when the world will end. It could mean that a big change is coming. Or maybe they just stopped on a certain date.

BTW, it could be 2013 because of how we keep track of the years, i.e. there was no year "0".

I agree with Cindy. Just to think about it, right now we are facing the Global Warming. It will probably be a new era to come.
