I'm a clean freak so, the house looking messy will automatically get me into the mood. I can't sleep or relax unless the house is right. But I have to have the right music on. Either Sade or ABBA does the trick. Also, when I'm feeling lazy I just add little rewards for cleaning each section of the house...like once I'm done with the kitchen I'll make myself a sandwitch or answer two questions on here etc LOL.

What about you?

Having company come over. lol

But to be serious, put on some upbeat music, take out a timer to determine how long you'll spend in one area (like 15-30 min.) and schedule time for breaks and water, so you don't get cleaning burn out.
Maybe you can invite a friend over to help you clean, it's always more fun to clean with somebody else around and then return the favor.

preparing for company or preparing to go on vacation.

I pretty much like my house clean all the time but mst ofthe time it looks "lived in" and I just have to deal with that. I cannot stand, however to come home from vacation with the prospect of unpacking and doing laundry and walk in the house and see something out of place or a mess here or there. Before I leave for vacation, EVERY room gets a spring cleaning and everything is perfectly in its place..

Invite all the rats, roaches and other pest and parasites inside your house then you will realize that i need to switch myself into "CLEANING MODE" button.

Stress. I find cleaning to be a great de-stresser: There is something about the act of taking control of *something* that eases anxiety.
