An exellent idea.......birth control and education on sex....lets reduce unwanted births.

This is not a good idea unless it is being distributed by counselors to girls that these counselors know well. For kids who aren't really sure about sex, providing them a means by which to engage in it without pregnancy risk is an incentive.

There was a program in a drug-torn area of Russia, in which hundreds in the community were desperately dependent on heroin. Not surprisingly, needles were shared and AIDS was an even bigger crisis than drug addiction. This program distributed clean needles to these people free of charge. It supported their habit (which was controversial), but it saved many people from HIV/AIDS. While I agree with the above poster that programs like this, and the idea of handing out birth control, are double-edged swords, sometimes that is exactly what we face as a society.

If there were adequate counseling in schools, and it was shared with these people that the kids were considering having sex, then I think it would be a good idea. Some women have sex in high school and become pregnant. Many end up keeping the children, abandoning educaitonal plans and struggling indefinitely to make ends meet.

i think it is a good thing. i would like to think that if my child wasn't comfortable enough to come to me to discuss birth control, and if even though i have had "the talk" with him or her, that there is a legal, supportive place such as their school that they can go to obtain this.

It's a cost saving measure - hand out condoms and there will be less AIDS. I don't think it encourages sex.
