He simply wasn't that good. With his patented "Four Corners" offense, and no shot clock throughout almost all of his career, he played not to win, but not to lose. He would go to the "Four Corners", it seemed, anytime his team was ahead in the second half, and the game became a boring one of keepaway, passing the ball around the outer perimeter, with no goal other than to take time off the clock. In his only NCAA Championship win, I believe, it took a "buzzer beater" shot, by none other than Michael Jordan himself, for his team to overcome Georgetown. This team also had James Worthy andSam Perkins on it, and Smith could only muster a last second win? It's said only Dean Smith could keep Michael Jordan under 15 points a game. Growing up on the East Coast, I got tired every year of hearing how great Dean Smith was, when, to be honest, with all the talent that went through his program, he should have won many more Championships.

John Wooden is still the best

John Wooden of UCLA(coached from 1964-1975). I mean come on, during the time he was a coach he won the championships 7 times in a row.Total he's won 10 which is the most all-time. The amazing thing about him is that out of the 11 seasons he's coached he went to the final 4 all 11 time and won it 10 out of 11 times. I mean, no doubt Dean Smith is awesome. But if you compare Smith to Wooden, Smith looks like a Middle School coach.

You know I used to think that as well. I was like "Why is Dean Smith so overhyped?" But I do give him credit mainly for his recruiting efforts. If it wasn't for recruiting, the teams would not have been as good. But the coaching staff did its job and got the correct guys to build the program. But I think a coach like Krzyzewski is a bit higher in standard than Smith, even Bobby Knight. But Coach Smith is in my mind not overrated anymore, just because of the "overall" accomplishments he and his staff have done.

Dean Smith was one of the best NCAA basketball coaches ever. His UNC Tar Heels are legendary. When he retired, he had the most wins ever in NCAA Division 1. His teams appeared in 11 Final Fours. Dean Smith was also a class act who placed a high emphasis on education. His players graduation percentage was awesome.

In my opinion, for what it's worth, only Mike Krzyzewski (Duke) was better.

Wow, you seem to be bordering on obsessive. A part of coaching college ball is recruiting. To have all of those players he did means he was a damn good recruiter. He was also a good teacher for his kids. X's and O's he probably could have been better, but overall he was a very good coach.

I don't think he's overrated as a coach. No one can take away what he was able to accomplish. I respect what he did for college basketball, but there are some of his personal thinkings that I disagree with.

It took Fred Brown passing to the other team and Chris Webber calling a time out to win his championships.
