Okay, I am basically computer illiterate. I need someone to take the time to walk me through this, step by step. Sorry. I also came across the message that "no active mixer devices are available." I purchased this computer used, and there are no manufacturers names, so I am completely lost when I get the answers that I have been receiving. Thank you for all who are willing to have some patients with me. I also don't know how to get a hold of anyone who sends me an answer I'd be interested in finding more information on. Please help me!!

Refer to the owners manual of your computer and find out what sound card/chip you have. Go to the sound card manufacturer's website and follow the prompts to download and install updates for your new XP operating system. That should get your sound working.

Simply stated, any driver is software written to link hardware to the operating system. You are trying to link your sound card/chip to your new XP operating system.

A audio driver is a piece of software that allows your computer to communicate with a device like your sound card. It sounds like you need to install the driver for your sound card. You can download these from the manufacturers website. There are also some websites that can run a scan of your system and tell you what drivers you need.

If it's brand name computer, find the model number and go to the manufacturer's web site to download drivers.

If it's a custom built computer you need to know what sound card is in.

If you have an internet connection you can go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager and try finding an exclamation mark in the list and click on it and try to update the driver. If you're lucky Windows will download it from Microsoft's database.

I am willing to bet that you have an onboard sound card. Find your mobo cd and install the sound driver from there.

If you do not know your mobo manufacturer, download a nifty tool called Everest. It will tell you your mobo manufacturer. Go to the website and download the audio driver. Voila~
