There have been countless times when me or my boyfriend have nearly been rammed by them whilst out and about, many more times than by a bike or a skater etc, in fact I don't think I have even had a near miss with any other moving vehicle, probably because nothing else is allowed to tear through shops and public areas like these scooters do, and they don't half move fast, if they hit you, they are going to do damage. They are allowed into tight spaces which would cause a serious health and saftey issue if ther was to be a fire or evacuation for whatever the reason. Apart from that the people riding them are uninsured, unlicenced and often have very poor eyesight and would not be alowwed to drive a car. I think there should be a practical test simlar to cycle proficiancy and an eye test, and this should be mandatory before you are even allowed to buy a scooter. Before you leave your PC oppinions, just take a moment to see the other side of the coin here.

hazard

i was coming out of a shop and this old ... we'll call them dear, ran over my foot, i was in agony, they just looked and carried on their way, and why the hell were they on the pavement in the first place,

its a scooter so it should be on the road, and should have tax and insurance, and not allowed on the road at peak times,

I'm not being nasty but teenage tearaways are always on the news, what about the pensioner tearaways?

some of them even aim for you in shopping malls and expect you to move, like you shouldn't be in their way

I have had my scooter for just over a year now.

I can't walk and i find it difficult to balance due to curvature of the spine.

I understand where you are coming from but would wish to suggest the following:

1 That the more disabled an individual is the more respect they have for their fellow beings.

2 That they have become a fashion item for those elderly individuals with some spare cash.

3 That I find "Spooky Speed" to be the most upsetting. On low power with a bit of skill particularly in supermarkets the scooter can be driven at such a slow speed that movement is only just discernable. This plus covering my eyes with my left hand to prevent me seeing (actually I peep through my fingers) sends fellow shoppers ballistic

Mobility scooters have their pros and cons. On the plus side, they are very helpful for folks with limited mobility, in getting around their homes, or outside on level surfaces in grocery stores and other public buildings. However, they do pose a safety threat in the situations that you describe. I do think those who are eligible for the mobility scooter should have a great deal more instruction and practice for getting around safely, and for the safety concerns of others. For people who are unable to walk, scooters are far superior to wheelchairs, and much less wieldy, as they can get through narrower spaces. But while they do have certain benefits, they also have their limitations. They are of no value either going up or down steps.

Where do you live in a retirement home? I may have seen one person on a scooter, and never even came close to what your describing. I don't think its necessary at all, the top speed is maybe 4 miles an hour? If a person that is walking around if you can't get out of the way of something that is going 4 miles an hour there is a big problem.

But also consider that these scooters enable people who would not otherwise be able to get out, to do shoping, etc., visit people, go to religous services, and not be stuck indoors staring at four walls for 24 hours per day. You see, I am one of those dangerous people, and am thankful for my scooter

Can be. A neighbour was travelling in the middle of the road shouting 'have you seen my dog?'. Just off the main road too.
Luckily no cars came along, but if one had...
whose fault would any accident have been?

The old farts that drive them are a hazard to other road users. Make your roads safer and score a hood ornament today!
