Thick maxi pads -- they are much more comfortable than the thin ones after childbirth. And if you wet a few of them with chamomile tea & freeze them and they feel really good if you are sore.

I didn't have enough wash clothes, receiving blankets or hats. With my winter baby, she wanted to be carried all the time (warmth), so I was glad I had a sling (the other two kids hated it, but that might have been because they were summer babies). And don't forget lots of batteries for the camera (and film if you have that kind of camera).

I agree that having ready-to-go meals in the freezer or cupboard was a huge help. You need to eat a lot while nursing.

I brought along a ton of extra stuff I didn't need. I was only in the hospital for a day, so shampoo/conditioner and the like were unnecessary (I was too tired to even think about showering!), I didn't use my portable cd player (soothing music for labor), brought too many changes of clothing, forgot to bring nursing pads along, and had to send DB back home for toilet paper 'cause the hospital stuff was too rough. Turns out I was supposed to be using the witch hazel pads for that - oops? The thing that came in handy the most was a stick of balmex. My poor lips were so dried out, I was using it every 15 minutes!

My first night home from with my first baby I was paking myself and the new baby up in the car at 1:30 AM..to go to wal-mart to get gas drops!!! Things that I was really glad to have were, binkys, recieving blankets for spit up, bibs, a swing. I had a list of names and numbers I could call if I had any questions about anything, that way I didnt have to search for a number. Of course you need, little hats and little hand mittens worked great b/c mine was a mover and scratched his little eyes all the time! Remember..sleep when the baby sleeps..I wish I would have followed that advice!! Good luck and Congrats!

possibly some bra pads with lansinoh on them they really help with leakage and the lanasil really helps with chafing and soreness from breastfeeding. Pumps are a really good idea for storing milk, which helps if you ever need a baby sitter or need to have someone else feed baby. I dont know if you feel like you will always have baby with you but trust me, every woman needs a break every now and then.

Cloth diapers--even if you're not going to use them regularly, the ones without the extra padding are great as clean-up rags, etc. Multi-purpose!

And you never know--you might suddenly find yourself out of disposables in the middle of a blizzard.

For you: sanitary pads (don't count on the hospital)
ice pack
heating pad

For the baby, buy a very pure detergent in case your baby has sensitive skin.
Have fun.
PS Drink lots and lots of fluids, especially water. It will help give you plenty of milk.

I know you are probably going to use disposable diapers but, make sure you have at least one pack of cloth diapers, for just in case, for example, if you run out of diapers, need a burp cloth, child is allergic to the disposables, and face it, after the child is out of diapers they make excellent dust cloths... another thing to remember is.......it's all trial and error, your parents went thru it too as with millions of others, but just remember to love that child and make all the time in the world for him/her......you will be just fine, also if they incure hiccups put a lil bit of sprite in some water it will help cure them . best of luck and congrats!!!
