I am equi-distant between both of them so I try them both. They carry mostly the same items but not always the same brands of them.
In terms of smart workers Lowe's seems to have the edge for people who know what they are talking about. I asked for a bathtub replacement drain in HD and the clerk had a good attitude but no idea what is was or where they stock them.
In terms of prices Lowe's always has something on clearance and if it happens to be something you can use their prices are unbeatable. I once took a course on installing storm doors at Lowe's and they took a new $250 door out of its box to use for the demo. After the session I asked what happens to the one that opened up for the demo. The answer was "Oh we will put that on clearance for $30 tomorrow and if we forgot to put any part back in the carton it is covered by the manufacturer's warranty and they will mail you those parts." They also said any door in an open box is on clearance at that price level. I was back the next day and Lowe's is now where I look first.

I have to go with lowes. First its slightly cheaper, and for some reason whenever I go to Home Depot, they never have what I'm looking for and Lowes usually does. For instance, they had mold removal cleaner when Depot didn't, they had the type of work gloves I needed when home depot didn't. Home Depot didn't even have the right file I needed to sharpen an axe. I've got nothing against the staff, just the inventory.

I have worked with both and prefer Lowes. Their contractors show up on jobs on time, know what they are doing and will go the extra mile for customer service. Their training for in-store employees is more extensive, they carry a better quality of wood, they are able to special order and it comes in when they say it will. They handle problems better than Home Depot in my experience and when parts are missing they just give them to you if they have them in stock or contact the manufacturer on your behalf to obtain them. When they make deliveries, they will put the pallets where you want them and don't just deliver curbside like Home Depot does. Home Depot is oriented to contractors and Lowes is oriented to the consumer and the designer. It is probably why their stock always rides higher...

Home Depot! Much better Pro desk. Also, their staff is more friendly - especially since their new CEO took over. I would have given a totally different answer 2 years ago!

Good to see a few familiar peers here. I agree Sensible; it hardly seems possible that an MGR of a plumbing dept. could make $60 plus per hour. Retired might be OK?
Anyway, to the asker. As you can see Those Pros, as well as regular DIY's have different opinions, and isn't it great that we have Choice.
I shop both, as well as others, even small operations, but for me it's as much a matter of convenience as anything else; especially with Gas selling at $3.25 per gallon. If a Lowes is ON MY WAY, I may stop there for the difference in cost in pennies, as opposed to going across town to an HD. Since my livelyhood is profit based, and my truck is part of my livelyhood, I do consider all manner of expenses.
On another note, the choice might be as personal as ones religion or politics, based on learned experiences or not. It might be as nebulous as asking ones favorite color?
They both have positive and negative points, at the end of the day.

On a light hearted note; I can spend entire days wandering the aisles. It's pretty much like Toys R Us, for me...smiles.

Home Depot it is a little more geared to the professional as opposed to the weekend warrior. Plus I like Ryobi tools and you can only get them there!

I do not like either, but if I had to choose I would say Lowes.
Home Depot never has enough associates to help.
