You can argue technique til you're blue in the face, personally I like Vai's songs and phrasing better. I've seen Vai twice in concert (saw him a couple weeks ago at Starland) and they are just great, entertaining shows with top notch musicianship.

As the other guy said Joe taught Steve some and besides, Vai's solo stuff really sux. I have some of both of their stuff and I like listening to Satriani, I dont even bother listening to Vai's stuff as I dont like it.

Okay, just because it's bugging me . . . while Satch WAS a teacher to Steve for a while (they still trade demos) Steve learned most of his chops at Berklee School of Music. Joe did not "teach" Steve to play; just helped him along, so to speak. And, as usual, Rocker hits the nail on the head; Satch has more soul in his playing than Steve. It is readily apparent in any of the G3 DVD's available. You can almost do an "A-B" comparison to the two guitarists for your own conclusion. Both are technically awesome. Joe just seems to find the groove more often.

Joe Satriani, although Vai seems to have maybe a tad more techinque, Satriani has more soul.

Satriani simply for the fact that his music is easier to listen to. Vais work screams rockstar.

Joe Satriani for the fact he taught Vai along with Kirk Hammett (Metallica), David Bryson (Counting Crows), Kevin Cadogan (Third Eye Blind), Larry LaLonde (Primus, Possessed), Alex Skolnick (Testament) and others!

Satriani, much more substance/soul. Seen Joe live when i was a kid, met Steve one time, he was pretentious. Kirk Hammet blows em both away though.

Technically speaking, I think Satch is better. But I also think that Vai plays things that no one else in the world can play.

I am going to have to go with Satriani. Seen him twice and his concerts are very good. His musicianship is second to none. Surfing with the Alien is an excellent compilation. Besides, He didn't cave and play on the heinous David Lee Roth solo disasters!
