They are usually mid to heavyweight cotton or cotton & polyester blend casual slacks. The most popular colors are solid tan, blue, gray and black. Many people call them khaki's and they are easy to care for and durable.

landsend.com. If you go there and do a search for chinos, you'll see just what they are like. They're not thick like denim, but their not thin like wool/polyester slacks.
