I think that we should stop doing Yahoo's job for them and do away with the report button altogether

The rumor is going around that there has been a "troll purge" on Yahoo in the past week or so. I don't know if that is a component of a lot of people reporting violations, or Yahoo taking action.

According to recent communications from Y!A they are monitoring the reporting process, and taking action to encourage those who report responsibly, and to banish those who report based on their own agenda.

I think the reporting process needs some tweaking, but I think the basic concept is sound.

Personally, I have only hit that button once, and the question was so racist, hate filled, and offensive I just had to do it.

I don't agree with everything I read, and there are certainly some trolls about, but I've taken the approach of ignoring the obvious troll posters. If we all do that, just ignore them (and I'm talking bi-partisan - if an obvious troll is a liberal, and you're a liberal, don't throw gas on the fire by replying to it. I'm a moderate with liberal leanings, by the way) eventually they'll grow bored and go away.

With a very important election coming up in a year, there are important discussions that need to be had, vital issues that need to be addressed. If we, as a community, do what we can to clean up the boards, we might just learn some world changing truths here.

If you get reported, and you feel it's unjustified, mail Yahoo and protest. As these false reporting issues are brought to the attention of Yahoo, we may just see a change in the tenor of these boards that will benefit us individually, our country, and our world.

yes yes yes Some idiot violated me for asking "WHY DO PEOPLE DENY GLOBAL WARMING. Oh, how offensive! Just about brought me to tears! I'm afraid for my life! Explain how this question violated the "safety" of the group? These people are not intellegent enough to engage in debate, so they misuse the report button as a tool for expressing their opposing opinion. I think multiple reporters should be thrown out! You can't possibly be threatened or offended by 20 people every day!

Yes, if the reporting is unsubstantiated. However, if someone is being offensive, they should be reported. This is a family friendly forum for questions and answers. There are other forums for rants.

Yeah. When somebody gets over 30 violation notices in like 5 minutes something is going on and those responsible should be penalized somehow.

I think that would be a serious consideration for the Yahoo! staff.
