Hi. I'm a first year undergraduate. Right now I'm working toward my B.A. in Psychology, because I thought I wanted to do counseling and other things of that sort. However, now I'm entertaining the idea of Psychiatry -- if I want to become a Psychiatrist should I switch to get my B.S.??

I know I need to go onto my doctorate -- but my question is just for now as I'm an undergrad. Do I switch to get my BS?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor and you will have to go to medical school.

Definitely. There's not much you can do even with a BS (at least not much that pays really well). You need to at least get your Master's should you decide to go into some sort of counseling.

However, if you want to go into psychiatry, get your doctorate.

Yes, and you will need to take a variety of science and math classes as you will have to go through medical school and will need a very solid background in those subjects aside from psychology.
