You are probably barking up the wrong tree. I would investigate the slower computer to ensure that it is not slow from SpyWare or network component problems. Run a Speed test individually on each machine and see the base-line differences. Then try to run the Speed test together on BOTH.

Try this speed test from Vonage.

Are you sure both machines are using the same type of network connection speed ie.. both machines are running 10/100 network cards? Are you using a network switch or a hub? They are different. A switch will share network speed across the whole network, a hub does not do this. Is the network configured correctly? If not this could impair the network also.

What you are talking about is quality of service (QoS) controls. Most home routers only have basic functionality and features like QoS are usually only available on high end routers. One solution you can try is using an alternate router firmware like DD-WRT on the router you already have. (http://www.dd-wrt.com/)

DD-WRT is a Linux based firmware that replaces the firmware (embedded software) that comes on your router and includes a whole collection of advanced functionality including QoS. It uses a web based configuration utility just like the stock firmware and is easy to use and setup.

For example of what you can do with QoS: I have my router configured so bit torrent traffic is given minimal priority while VOIP is given maximum priority. This way I can download as many bit torrents as I like, and if I ever need to use the internet for anything else, the router slows down my bit torrent downloads so I can use as much bandwidth as I need for other tasks. Likewise, if I receive of a VOIP call, the call quality will be decent regardless of what else I'm doing on the internet because the VOIP traffic is always given as much bandwidth as it needs. You can setup similar controls by computer as well.

The 3 hundred Mbps velocity is maximum effective between your laptop and your wireless router. it won't velocity up your precise information superhighway connection. in the experience that your information superhighway connection is two Mbps then you certainly can nonetheless in basic terms get that %. on your computing gadget, even making use of wireless N. the two Mbps velocity is from the information superhighway on your house of residing and into your on the spot router, so in spite of the undeniable fact that which you will download at 3 hundred Mbps out of your router, it relatively is maximum effective getting into your router at 2 Mbps interior the 1st place. desire it relatively is sensible.

I suggest you get the Home Networking kit which allows you to distribute your speed equally.
You can connect 6 computers to the home networking modem. This should be available with your Internet service provider.
