To Me Bob Seger is the preeminenet American Rocker and Singer Songwriter and has been for 30 Years. But You almost never hear anything about Him.
Night Moves alone should earn Him the respect of being one of the greatest American musical artists ever.
Anyone else think Seger is horribly overlooked and underappreciated?

Well, yeah, I think he's underrated. by some critics. But not so by others. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004... that's not something you get for being an "also-ran". "Old-Time Rock and Roll" was voted onto the RIAA's list of 365 most significant songs of the 21rst Century. Last year's new album, "Face the Promise", went platinum... but that was his first new album since 1995. Springsteen put out four new studio albums and a live album in the same 11 years (and another one just now)... you don't say as Nationally popular everywhere if you don't stay current.. Seger will probably always sell out the better part of a week Van Andel Arena despite national recognition, just as Springsteen can pretty play as many sold out shows as he wants at the Spectrum or the Meadowlands.

I'll have to admit my all-time best rock and roll experience was at a Seger concert. An on-line friend of mine turned out to be the Bass Tech duing Seger's "It's a Mystery" tour, and brought me in to watch the show from the stage, at the Spectrum in fact. Then I hung out and drank beer with the road crew until it they had to take off... Saw them again during the same tour in the Baltimore area. So Seger's definitely tops in my book, but I guess I agree he's sometimes underrated on the National level.

Unlike many of the other people responding here, I do remember him well. The truth is that he never quite got the respect he deserved. This was true even in the 1970s, when he was at his peak. He had been recording since the late 1960s but he certainly wasn't being noticed like Bruce Springsteen, who got his face plastered on two major news magazines in the same week.

I am on your side for Seger. He is one of the all time greats, but I am also 42 and many of the younger generation does not know his music. Even Face the Promise was a strong album, but it did not get much airplay. In Michigan, he is equal to all the greats, and probably more revered. For those who need to know, just get Live Bullet and you will come to understand.

What do you mean? He'll always be remembered...
...as the Chevy Truck guy!! Like a Rock!

...but seriously "Against the Wind" is also another one of his masterpieces, right up there with "Nightmoves." Underrated, but the same can also be said for George Thoroughgood, Bruce Hornsby, and a handful of other "Autumn" Rockers.

I tend to agree w/ murphs.

He never really managed to build new audiences (in a very noticable way, at least), over the years. (as opposed to acts like say, Rush or Aerosmith) So as a result, his core audience are those who knew him in the 70s.

I like his old stuff, but to be honest, I don't think he really brought anything very new or original to the table. Just good, but sorta run-of-the-mill, straight ahead, soulful, "blue collar" rock. I kinda see him as one step above "Just Another Rock Act".

He got admiration and respect. He's not getting it now because he's not relevant. He's history. I mean "Night Moves" came out 30 years ago.
