Because the human race is very selfish!

Because humans strive for pleasure. In everything.
The highest point is where one will alwas want to be, even if they don't tell you so.
You will have noticed some people aim too high and others to low. Some pretend they don't care, but only beacause they have given up.
I agree, we are never content with what we have.
Hope your content with your answers though!(",)

Purge. I feel more freedom when I let go. Stuff is not important. Check out a book in the library. Contemplate life. Become a minimalist. Things drag you down. Thoughts, keyboard, screen, breath; I'm mixing up the old man and machine again aren't I? The way of the world.

My husband, my friends and I have debated this question many times. I think its a multi part answer.
First, its in our very nature to store against a time of famine. this transfers, in today's society, to having more...bigger, better, etc.
Second, we are a restless species....from the time of the hunter-gatherers until today, our species has not been content to simply exist...we strive for better existence. This, also, translates to bigger. better, etc.
Third, the media does us no favors. We are bombarded from childhood with the concept of rich=good, poor=bad.....rich=many "things", poor=lack of "things"...a have/have not world view that damages all we see, hear, feel, touch.
I'm sure psychologists, philosophers and other can give you better reasons...more valid to the inner workings of the mind, of society...but as for me, this seems to work.

Hi

As Gandhi said "There is enough in the world for people's need but not for their greed." As a result of our selfishness, others are in poverty, however few seem to genuinely care.

Material possessions make us more greedy. Say we saw a pair of jeans. We like them, and we won't rest until we buy them. Then you buy them, but then there's something else you like. There will always be something else you like. This creates greediness.

People who have less material possessions tend to be less greedy, merely because they do not know what they could be having.

Hope that helped

I don't want anything. I think people grow out of it. I am in my sixties and so are a lot of my friends and we really don't want much at all. A lot of the stuff on offer seems pointless. I could do with a new mattress on my bed at the moment, so I'll save up and buy myself one. Then I'll be completely happy.

i want more out of life which is a natural desire, the most important ethical question is how i get it, people who are content can be seen as having given up and lost the will to carry on searching

it is trying to make our lives as good as they can be. Also, it is to do with the developed countries societies. everyone is out there to get more than they have now for as little effort as possible. if anything they take too much. however if you look at these tribes and some villages in places like africa and south america they take only what they need and put back as much as they take in the form of preservation and growing trees/plants/crops.

some ppl are content with their life.
when we live in a culture ( such as the west) it forces us to spend, spending to gain material goods is not at all satisfying.

we as individuals need to focus on the reality of our lives.
and discover personal satisfaction.
seek and you will gain.
