Get a pc. Macs are meant to be more of a fashion statement like the ipod. This is why many people don't take it seriously and trust Microsoft. I tried leapord and time machine is the same as Norton antiviruse Data backup which backs up data on an external dive for easy access and can be programed to update as often as you like. Macs are now trying to be more like pcs using intel processor chips. And people complained about vista copying OS Tiger! Do your research guys. Pcs are well worth your money. Perhaps Macs are expensive because not many by them.....who knows.
Also if you notice whenever apple compares themselves to windows they always talk about viruses. Wow i dont have any anti-viruse software and i never got a virus. Apple just wants to scare you into buying there product. This makes hate them even more not to mention when i sent my ipod video for erepai i got it back scratched up....WTF!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry, a Mac will be able to deal with downloading and converting files for your iPod, a lot better than a windows PC. They are also not much more expensive, and they are a lot better built, especially compared to any PC I've seen. My Mac hasn't broken (and has only had 1 crash) once in the two years I have had it, and it's only a £279 Mac Mini. Plus, they are beautiful, and, with leopard, have an operating system years ahead of Windows. The choice is clear. Choose a Mac.

That has always been a question for everyone...
Take a step back and think on a few things..
1) What will you really be using the laptop for. PC will offer a larger arry of software you could download / purchase compared to a mac
2) Mac have a simple solid look to it vs PC
3) Mac generally has an easier to use interface / OS vs PC
3) PC are more up to day with the technology than Mac and offer more varities. There are hundreds of companies producing a PC style notebook vs only one for Mac. So you have more buying options...
I highly suggest you go to the apple store and use their mac. Then go to bestbuy, compusa or circuit city and use a few of the PC. Which one feels best to you is the one you should buy.

A Mac can do all the downloading and file converting better than any pc. Ipod is Apples thing remember.
Good rule of thumb, if it's media you want, get a Mac.
If you want number crunching programs and stuff like that, then get a PC
BUT
Mac is quickly catching up on that score! Most Pc users are just unaware of what Mac can do.

I'm a PC tech as a part time gig from my house. I also started working on Macs too. So here are two hypothetical troubleshooting processes" Carl will play the part of the broken PC owner and Susan will take the Mac.
PC:
ME: OK, does it boot....
Carl: Yes, but the colors are all weird and the icons are big and none of them have their original picture and it takes 15 minutes to boot to my desktop and then I can't do anything for another 5 minutes.
Me:Ok let's boot in safe mode....
-time-
Carl: Ok, everything looks good, it only took about 2 minutes.
Me: now run your anti-virus program
Carl: yeah, I keep getting this little window that pops up and tells me the computer might be infected and offers to give me a free scan. The scan found 450 problems but it wanted $30 to fix them so I didn't do it, but the wondow still pops up every 30 seconds.
Me: so what program are you using now for virus protection?
Carl: Norton, but I didn't pay to renew it.
Me: ok, let's uninstall Norton and install Avast! What about Anti-spam?
Carl: Doesn't norton do that?
(installs ensue)
-time-
Carl: I'm tired
-time-
Carl: i'm hungry
-time-
Carl: ok, got it, Avast found 35 problems and SpyBot found 89. Got them cleared out.
Me: now uninstall "CleverlyHiddenMalware, SeeminglyHelpfulMalware, FakeAntivirusMalware, AOLcrapware, CameWiththeComputerAndSlowsItDownBy40%Ware1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6; NiftyIconThingy 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6; HelperIntheNotificationAre 1, 2, 3, 4;
-time-
Carl: My cat's hungry
-time-
Carl: it's bed time
-time-
Carl: ok done.
Me: restart
Carl: ok, wow that's a lot faster
Me: now download and run CCleaner and Autotoruns to clean the rest of the crap off it
Carl: do we have to do all of this
Me: no
Carl: I'm fine with it running a bit slower and with that thing popping up all the time. I was thinking of getting a new computer anyway.
Me: I'll buy that one.
Carl: how much
Me: $50
Carl: I'll put the money towards a new PC, I want to get Vista it looks sweet!! Did you hear it has transparency, that should fix all my problems!
Me: night carl
Carl: do you love me?
Me: night
Susan rings
Me: hello
Susan: My mac is slowed to the point that I can't do anything without waitng for 3 minutes
Me: what do you have running?
Susan: how do I check that?
Me: look at your dock and see what has a little black arrow next to it
Susan: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, safari, Word, chat, iTunes, FinalCut, the DVD player and my artificial intelligence program I made.
Me: restart the computer
-time-
Susan: I'm going to make tea
Susan: Wow, that did it. Computer's running fine, thanks
Me: Do you love me?
Susan: 'night

A Mac would do everything you want plus more!. Don't know what that other person was talking about, macs overheat?, don't think so, and I am on mine for hours at a time. They are fast, make downloading so easy and are the safest computer on the market. Once you have used a Mac you will never want to go back to a PC.

If your main concern is your ipod you should defiently get the mac...they just bumped up the speeds with the macbooks and Leopard just came out so I would recommend a Macbook..you can always add an external flat screen display and keyboard so it is a desktop at home and a laptop on the road..also the new macs since they are window based can run microsoft operating systems but not sure why you would want too

Mac, Mac, Mac. It's all about the Mac. And given the fact that you're into your iPod and iTunes, it only makes sense. Have you seen the commercials Apple puts on about this question?
www.apple.com/getamac/ads/
If you're the stiff in a suit, that's one thing. Do what suits you. But if you're a part of generation X, generation Y, or generation NOW, I'd highly recommend a Mac. And props to the commenter above me who mentioned how easily a laptop can be used as a desktop. That was one of my deciding factors when I purchased mine.
Good luck!

Pc's are good for crashing, playing games, using the "standard" formats and helping out Microsoft. I would recommend installing Linux on the pc.
Macs are good for video/image editing, working good, don't have many viruses. They are however a little bit more money, but I think it is well worth the extra bits. They have the ability to convert most standard formats. If you don't have to do anything with a Microsoft product I would really recommend on getting a Mac.
Laptops in general are not the best to upgrade. They are made to be portable and easy to carry around.
Desktops are made to stay in one place and are more affordable to upgrade.
