Hey, I'm a college student.
Is it a copyright infringement/plaigerism if I directly post certain passages of my school textbooks online? I plan on posting my study outlines in a blog to hopefully help other students study.. and maybe even get other people involved.

.. so can i?

depends on how much you post.

more then a paragraph or two and you are probably infringing.

see www.chillingeffects.org for definitive answers on internet copyright questions.

"Fair use" allows quoting a short passage for the purpose of critical review or analysis. For example, short clips of a movie are generally shown as part of a movie critic's review. Drama critics are expected to quote a line or two from plays to make an example. If you are quoting a sufficient length that a student would not need to purchase or read the original work, then that could be commercial damage, which is not allowed under fair use. Find the right balance, and error on the side of brevity.

You can publish (and yes, posting on the Internet would be considered publishing) references to the text as long as they are clearly referenced and you don't exceed certain length limitations. You can not post the entire book and call it a reference because that would violate copyright. You can not post excerpts from the book and imply that they are your own works because that would be plagiarism.

i've got self assurance you may post costs from books as long you reference the place to procure it. Outlines or table of Contents you may post, yet content textile is yet another element. i think of there might desire to be a cut back to how my words you may quote at a time or have on your blog.

Its ok so long as you state that you are quoting from "_______" book (usually by a footnote).
In that way you are acknowledging it is not your own work, but from another source.
