Hey, I'm a college student.
Is it a copyright infringement/plaigerism if I directly post certain passages of my school textbooks online? I plan on posting my study outlines in a blog to hopefully help other students study.. and maybe even get other people involved.

.. so can i?

It's not illegal to post anything really in your blog for personal use, however remember that anyone can see a public blog and if you don't quote your sources, people could get into trouble by plagiarizing what you posted without realizing it didn't come from you (though they should quote you if you wrote it).

However, posting anything for financial gain that doesn't belong to you is quite illegal, such as selling the outlines or passages in the book to other students.

As long as you write on the bottom what the outline is of and give credit to the textbook then you should be fine.

Great idea to post outlines online!

I believe you can post quotes from books as long you reference where you got it. Outlines or Table of Contents you can post, but content is another thing. I think there might be a limit to how my words you can quote at a time or have in your blog.

Standard copyright statements include permission to use the materials for non-commercial educational purposes. So, no problem there! However, as other people suggested, do cite passages of text correctly.

No it's not legal. However, the internet isn't regulated, so do it anyway. Your intentions are noble and a lot of people can't afford the college textbooks.

you are a good guy, IF you are doing it for the reasons above. There's nothing wrong with spreading knowledge.

I think it's OK if the bulk of the outline is original - written by you (even if it includes condensed phrases and sentences from the source) - and the quoted portions are clearly noted as such.

You can quote any book as long as you properly cite it.

If these outlines were created by someone else (in their entirety) there may be some copyright issues.

You cannot post mass sections of a book without consent of the copyright holder (i.e. several pages of text, scanned copies of the pages, etc.)

You do need to be care full, as it can be considered copy right infringement, how ever, I was wondering if you could make it like a quote, as you would in a book report.

I don't see why not. Especially as long as it is your own outline. I guess really you'd be doing it on your own risk. Can't hurt for trying and can't get in trouble for innocently trying to help others.
