I've had very good luck with a Mercury Sable. Our other car is an 04 Toyota SE Camry. It's been in the shop for one repair under warranty. A faulty engine knock sensor. Great fuel economy, 35 on trips.
I'm 6' 4" and my next car is going to have more space. The Chevrolet Impala is exactly where it's at. Used or new they have a good track record.
You'd get a good deal if you could find a one owner 1-2 year old Impala with not many miles on the odometer.
I completely understand the bitterness when it comes to maintenance and repair on any off-shore owned car company. I've seen common every day parts, starters, alternators that cost 100% more than new factory parts for USA cars.

Look into a Nissan Maxima they are great cars that do not give many or any problems I have had 3 of them and they have all been great the one I currently have is an 03 model with 150,000 miles and it runs like new. Nice thing about the Nissan's with the vq3.0 V6 or the vq3.5 V6 is that its one of the top ten engines in the world for 13 years straight you should also look into a Nissan altima too. Well hope this helps
