Primitive? Like stones and spears?

Venezula has one of the richest oil reserves in the world. Every few years another small country comes along and wants to be a big player on the world scene. The best way to do that is to oppose the most powerful nation in the world. Hungry in the 50s (with the Soviets), Cuba did this in the 60s, Egypt in the 70s, Argentina (with the UK) and Poland (with the USSR) in the 80s.

Venezula is just another one of these countries that is using its resources in an attempt to be a more influencial nation on the world scene.

EDIT: To the person above that said America is losing its nation. You are horribly mistaken. The dollar is going through a much needed correction. When the dollar weakens it is actually better for American workers as the price of imports climb. The dollar will climb again once the US solves its short-terms problems. As for the North American union, that is a very unlikely event as relations with Canada and Mexico become more strained.

Because they feel they have 'arrived'. A egoist like Hugo Chavez naturally believes, rightly or wrongly, that his policies, and the nation's wealth from oil, will make a potent combination for the creation of an economic superpower in Venezuela.
Hence the posturing with the United States, the world's only current superpower, who every country loves to hate!!

Nations defy us all the time and we respond appropriately. The problem comes in when those nations threaten the United States. Then things can get a little messy.

Just how is Venezuela openly defying the United States ?

You do know that trade between Venezuela and the United States is at record levels.

That doesn't seem like defiance to me.

Seems like close cooperation to me.

Or do you consider words to be more important than acts ?

It is all for show. Without the US, they would be living in piles of dirt. We buy most of their oil and 75% of all goods purchased by Venezuelans are made in the US, including food.
