Tides are caused mostly by the gravitational pull of the moon, but part of it is the gravity of the sun! When the sun and moon and earth are lined up, that's when tides are the strongest because the sun and moon are pulling together. And that's when you get a new moon. When the moon is full, it's opposite the earth from the sun and the sun's gravity is pulling against the moon's gravity.
