Sorry but I need to add my two cents in disagreement with one of the above postings...

Vista is not just fluff. Anyone who really checks into it and takes a look at everything it offers will see the improvements.
Resource hog? Not really. It utilizes more. It will take full advantage of more memory, usb flash drives, etc. Readyboost is GREAT if you only have 1GB of ram. Utilizing AERO technology to take advantage of the power of your video card to run the desktop instead of using the CPU increases performance as well.

Yes, Vista may take a little more 'power' to run but it takes a lot more advantage of what is there. XP was great, I liked it, but Vista is the new OS... Vista is staying and XP is going.

Linux is nice but not as well supported and if you are not savvy w/ Linux then I really wouldn't suggest it.

Mac OS is great - but the hardware is silly expensive and then there is the factor that there are less software programs out there (this is a fact, not just an opinion).

The advantages of having xp is that everybody uses is it. If there is a serous question that you have to get answer you can call pretty much anyone that has knowledge about it. And that is why it is also a disadvantage. It is pron to hackers because of Microsoft's thing about not giving your source code out. That is why Windows XP has a lot of updates every week.

Windows has there plug n play, but most of there general codecs and drivers may or may not work. So, there are a lot of other codecs and drivers out there - they may or may not work as well.

The graphic user interface is really good and keeps the user well inform and it is easy to move around in it. I think they messed up in Vista with your new start menu concept, but it well grow on people.

I didn't know this, but the guy at the computer store told me this. XP doesn't recognize RAM more than 3.8 GB and the different packages of Vista doesn't recognize certain amounts of RAM.

If I can recommend a couple of operating systems that I like. If you have a pc based computer, Fedora is really nice. It is really secure, the developers that work at it and puts out may sure that there is not a lot of bugs. It is open source, so the hackers are not trying to break Fedora. I know now Windows can be ported on to a Mac, but it still has problems. For a Mac, I recommend Mac OS X Leopard, just because the security.

Advantage of XP: It is fast and efficient and it is compatible with most software that is made. It is simple and reliable and tested. Disadvantage: It is not that secure and it is not the latest. Advantage of Vista: It is new and secure. It has great user interface. It have so many great features that enables the user to do less. Disadvantage of Vista: It is a bloat ware. There are lot of unnecessary programs running. Over protective on the programs that your are using. It is slow and incompatible with other programs.

Versus what? Vista? Mac? Linux?

Versus Vista: Vista is fluff...waste of time...MS has as much as admitted it by extending the support period for XP by six months, and many "geeks" still ask for their new PCs with XP still installed. Vista is a resource hog.

Mac and Linux: XP has software availability and support due to the worldwide tradition or "addiction" you might say of using Windows. Mac will gain in this regard IMHO sooner than you might expect as more and more folks rebel against the white-stuffed-shirt Gates gang.

Linux? Though Linux is sweet and sleek, Linux is very limited in available software, and support is limited to geek forums for the technically oriented.

Mac for the future. XP for now.

I have found no disadvantages to it so far. The biggest advantage is that it is very, very hard to crash. I am no techie by any means and if I can't crash it , it can't be crashed. It is also easy to navigate..
