A gift card to the mall will help show her what items REALLY cost and how you have to budget and choose between different items.
I'd also get her some of the items she wants, but look for holiday sales and maybe only buy her 1 nice outfit as opposed to a whole new wardrobe of clothes. Also, TJ Maxx has lots of brand-name stuff for not a lot of money, but you have to be willing to pick through the garbage to find the good stuff.
You can also buy her less expensive accessories from the stores she likes: instead of an expensive sweater, consider a pair of gloves, a graphic tee, or pajama bottoms.
Overall, if she really likes the brand-name stuff, I would focus on quantity--still get her what she wants, but less of it.
Hope this helps.

A lot depends on what she's into. If she likes a particular CD, DVD or video game that would be great. If she's into clothes take her shopping at the mall but set a budget. I do this with my nieces every year but they dont get to keep the clothes until Christmas. They always make a game out of who can get the most and the cutest on their budget. We then have a fancy girls lunch. Does she have an ipod? Does she want to decorate her room with anything special.

I'm a 50 year old man who never had children so I don't know a whole lot about what interests 9 year old girls, but for my niece's 9th birthday I got her the Guitar Hero 2 video game and she loved it. She and I play it together whenever I visit my sister. If your daughter has a Playstation 2 or an Xbox 360, Guitar Hero 2 is one of the most popular video games in the world.

clicked on this question as I have a 9yo, but its he's a son. They are alot alike though. My 9yo is very into what he considers 'stylish/trendy/fashionable' to the point of all but refusing to wear something that doesn't fit in that definition. So I feel your pain sista........ What we do with our kids in general (I have 3 others) is we tell them that Jesus got three gifts and that is how many they need. (I know I am being religious here, but that's what we do) Anyway they priorize what they want the most and I focus on those things. I try to save the things farther down on their lists for Grandparents and aunts, etc who ask for gift ideas.
Best of luck, and Merry Christmas!!

Time to teach her values in life. She should get what you can afford. If you can afford it buy one pricey item and explain that you can't afford the other things. Teaching children that money has to be spent wisely is very important.
