I have never heard of anyone wondering if it would crack open the earth. However, I have heard stories of some people questioning whether or not it would cause the oxygen in the atmosphere to set fire and basically cause the earth's atmosphere to burn up. The scientists doing the work obviously did not believe this would happen. They went ahead with the tests.

Not that I am aware of. They really didn't know what it would do, but calculations of the potential energy release probably assured them that the Earth wouldn't crack open.

There was, however, a concern that the atmosphere itself might catch on fire and burn off.

SOME SCIENTISTS BELIEVED THAT THE HEAT COULD START A CHAIN REACTION THAT "BURNED" THE ENTIRE ATMOSPHERE OF THE EARTH.

That was during the first hydrogen bomb test.
They feared the hydrogen in the atmosphere would also explode.
