Is Cuba really a threat? It just sounds like a bunch of old men bickering over the Cold War (Last I checked, that ended a while ago).

I just think it's stupid. The cold war ended. N. Korea I can understand, but Cuba? They aren't gonna do anything to us except maybe debate us on Marxism on some university campus.

The answer is simple. There are enough Cuban-Americans in Florida to tip the state, and 25 electoral votes, away from any candidate they see as not sufficiently tough on Castro. They still hope to get back the property they held before the revolution.

The U.S. has never gotton over the embarrassment of the Bay Of Pigs Invasion, and they still don't trust the Communists.
And as far as human rite issues go America does not have such a great history regarding the native Americans,or the Blacks or the Poor. Sad but true!

ummm... If you really have to ask this question you really need ot read your history. First off they are communist and they really have no use for things like human rights. Second Castro is an evil evil man reguardless what you read in the New York times. If we had open trade with Cuba it would give them the power and nessasary resourses to rebuild his crippled military. Just because the cold war is over does not mean that all our enemies from that era are whiped out. Sometimes its nessasary to keep you foot on a bully's throat after you have knocked him down. I'm gonna let you in on a piece of valuable information : There are alot of evils in this world that are being held back like water behind a damn. All that is nessary for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.

Politicians are afraid to make the Cuban exiles mad. It's a stupid policy that should have ended many years ago. If we can trade and travel with communist China and Communist Vietnam, why not Cuba?

The real reason is that Castro can't pitch.

But seriously folks, the reason for sanctions is because Cuba is a totalitarian regime and has traditionally been much more friendly with our enemies than with us. This combined with the fact that it is located just a few miles of of our coastline makes it in our (current) best interest to restrict their abilities. Perhaps now that Castro is playing less of a role in the direction of the country things will begin to change for the better.

Being as Hugo Chavez is a threat, and he is an ally Fidel Castro and of Cuba,. Both run their countries under dictatorship, and I think we would be opening a door to the enemy. I also think the government is out of it's mind to do business with Hugo Chavez since he hates us, but American needs the oil so the government continues to have ties with him. Cuba has nothing to offer America as far as the government is concerned.

your last statement is enough reason. its bad enough that ahmedinejad was given an audience in a US university. even if he did make himself look like a moron with his statement about homosexuals.

we also have no need to trade with them. for beaches and resorts there are many other options. we can get cuban cigars even with the sanctions. chances are more money would flow into cuba from the US than vice-versa. look at all the rich that took their money to cuba before the communist revolution.

lane, what country has a good record with dealing with the poor? in cuba they spend all the money on healthcare but food and employment are harder to come by. as far as blacks go, what country has a good record with them? they even enslave themselves, to this day.

It is politics.

No one wants to go against JFK, he is seen as the last good president that both sides can agree on.

To change policy while Castro lives would be seen as if you do not believe in the JFK Camelot myth.

Ya I think it's kinda dumb. Where I live just North of the border we see the influx of people that come up North just to buy Cuban Cigars lol. I dunno it just seems silly.

And to Mayor Quimby... if America doesn't want to associate themselves with regimes that are totalitarian... why are you allies with Saudi Arabia?

Because they're still anti-capitalist.

It's not easy to make change in America. We're pretty resistant.
