First of all, Pakistan is not our last ally. And they are a borderline ally at best. Pakistan is already a safe-haven for terrorists.

Pakistan will not become a democracy if Musharraf is in power. It has all of the appearances of one, but his use of the military to gain his way is one aspect of a dictorial state to me. With the suspension of their Constitution, he is not allowing Bhutto the opportunity to gather a larger following, in which I believe he would lose the election. He is using the cover of getting the terrorists under control and masking the fact that he is losing credibility amongst the people by turning Pakistan into a military state. As far as a Democracy, it's far from in and will remain that way.

Pakistan is an ally, but only a fair weathered one at that. That is why they are considered a haven for terrorists, but right now, I think Musharraf is presenting himself and his government as one that is supportive of the US. The problem is, why hasn't he been searching and suspending the rights of the terrorists all along? It's a sticky situation, and I think Musharraf is on his own agenda.

I believe the French President was just telling Congress that the Franco-American Allience is strong, then you have Great Britian, Austrialia, and many others.... America's "last" ally will be a becon of democracy, Musariff has already bent to the pressure of the United States and while it wasn't alot he did ensure elections by February.

Pakistan is already a haven for terrorists, why do you think OBL hasn't been found in Afghanistan.
Musharraf is playing both sides of the fence. He offers up a few minor terrorists every now and then to keep the Americans happy and the aid coming in but he turns a blind eye to the major players to keep the muslim fundamentalists happy and himself in power.

Pakistan is only our ally as long as American tax dollars continue to flow into Pakistan. Known also as diplomatic bribery. Bush can only hope that Pakistan will use the money to make it difficult for more terrorists to hide there. When the money stops, so does the alliance.

Despite the 30 Billion of out tax $, Bush gave Musharraf, the country is a pain in the back for India, which is rather stable and I can see, that there is going to be some problem soon. Bush/Cheney/Rice are such lost morons, they would be better of in a bingo parlor of a retirement home.

I was unaware that Britain (and NATO in general), Israel, and, in the Ummah, Saudi Arabia had become enemies.

Pakistan has only ever been a ally-in-name-only in the 'War on Terror,' though. It was on the CIA list of terrorist-supporting nations long before 9/11, for instance.

I think it will remain a military dictatorship for the foreseeable future. The Prime Minister seems to have little power at this time and The President is able to remove top judges at will.

Even if Musharraf steps down from the military, I feel it would only be for appearances.

Its obvious that the professionals and educated individuals in Pakistan want a democracy, what they got instead was a completely inept and impotent dictator.

The uneducated religious radicals want a return to a strong theocratical govt. (like all uneducated religious radicals of any stripe, want). And they already control a significant portion of the country.

So the question being, who will win? The professionals and well educated? The dictator? or The religious radicals?

My pick is the religious radicals. They have too much support already.
