To be to the left of politics means that you are critical of the current system, to be right means to be in favour of the current system. When the votes from a commons vote are counted we hear "the I's to the Right" and the no's to the Left. A common answer from rightwingers on this question would be " if you are not Conservative you are Communist" This is rubbish! Left wing takes a more Liberal view and a bottom up approach to society whereas a right wing is a top down collectivist approach. the right see society as a "thing" the Left see it for it is made up of eg "the invidual". The rightwing is steeped in history for lying, Hitler, George Bush, David Irving, Jonathan Aitken and Jeffrey Archer were both jailed for perjury. The Left is for the people!

It's a position in hockey. There are 3 forwards and 2 defensemen. The forwards are left wing, center, and right wing. The Detroit Red Wings made the left wing popular with their style of defense called the "Left Wing Lock". The man who handled that situation was Brendan Shanahan. So I suppose what they mean is to be just like Shanahan, which isn't bad since his slap shot can exceed 100 mph.

Political views are charted from a spectrum that works from left to right. On the left you have supporters of a large government...on the right you have supporters of small government. This is why you always hear about "tax & spend liberals" (the left), while the right is always cutting taxes (if no cutting spending. Most politicians fall somewhere in the middle. While the right wing tends to be more pro-free market and allows people the freedom to be ecoomically independent, the left tends to have social agendas for the support of the lower classes....which when taken to the EXTREME left may become communism. The right gone to extremes can lead to fascism...and becomes just as controlling as their communist counterparts...Hitler is the perfect example.

Basically, nowadays, politics is considered either right-wing (think Sean Hannity) conservatives or left-wing liberals.
In politics, the concept of left-wing, refers to a segment of the political spectrum that considers a high priority the achieving of social equality through collective rights (social), as opposed to purely individual interests (private) and a traditional view of society, represented on the right policy. In general, the left-wing tends to uphold a secular society, egalitarian and multicultural.

Seems to mean self-righteous and smug. An ideal blue-print to any left wing ethos has gotta be George Galloway, the king of the "I am never wrong and incapable of making a mistake brigade". Although Galloway does deserve credit in challenging some very dangerous decisions by this government.

To have government in the interests of all people but
especially the dispossessed and underprivileged
Right wing exists for the interests only of the possessed and
the privileged. But to win votes they pretend to serve the
interest of the dispossessed and underprivileged as well

Assuming that you really don't know....
There is a political spectrum that goes from left (liberal democratic) to the right (conservative republican).
Liberal vs. Conservative (set of beliefs that determine)
Democrat vs. Republican (set of beliefs that determine)
Most people are somewhere in the middle. Some lean to the right and some lean to the left.
