The Minnesota Twins offered outfielder Torri Hunter a three year contract worth $45 million. Hunter has been a solid player for the Twins for nine years. Why won't the Twins offer him the five year contract that he desires? Any ideas or inside knowledge on this subject?

Common sense. He's never been a good hitter nor has he ever utilized his speed on the basepaths. He had a carrer year during a contract season (of course) and is getting old. Expect his speed and hitting to decline (never were that good like I said) and his power #'s to fall back into the 20's. He's not worth a 5 year deal, and the Twins owner is a cheap skate who hates to spend his BILLIONS on his team. He's the richest owner in baseball but who would have known it.

I think 3yr/$45 mil is a very fair offer from a team that doesn't have the most in the til, especially for a player that I think is going to be 34 y/o next season, so it's tough to blame the Twins on this front.

They'll have enough to consider with Santana, Mauer, Morneau, and the other players who will ultimately become eligible for arbitration and free agency.

I'd let Hunter go. If he gets 5 or 6 years at $90 mil, then more power to him.

Edit: Yes, except David Ortiz was just entering his prime, and above all, wasn't demanding upwards of $15 million a year. Different situations all the way.

I would not offer $15 million for a 34 year old CF and I definitely would not offer him a 5 year deal. True the Twins don't have th $$ to spend but if they do this especially with Santana and Morneau coming up after next season then they would be losing one of those two players. I say better to keep them and let Hunter walk.

this is in basic terms approximately a shame to be sure Torri Hunter circulate. The Twins are a small corporation and he grew to become into disillusioned with them probably purchasing and merchandising their maximum suitable pitcher (Johan) and not making any progression. Ron Gardenhire is a good supervisor and this is in basic terms approximately a shame that Torri Hunter hasn't gotten a championship. His numbers have decreased in basic terms a splash, yet with Francisco Liriano and Johan Santana, additionally with Joe Mauer and that 1st baseman that the call is eluding me authentic now, the twins could have an exceedingly stable team.

He had a spike this year, but his numbers have been in decline. His range isn't what it was, he has never developed patience at the plate (so his OBP is pretty lousy), the only positive category he has ever even been in the top 5 in is doubles. For a guy who has never led the league in any offensive category, never gone past 125 OPS+, and who is turning 32 next year, $15 million is a great offer.

By the way, I like Hunter a lot and am a Twins fan.
And yes, Pohlad is actually the richest owner in baseball but a cheap mother#*#*#*#* b#str#rd.

I think three years is a fair offer for Hunter. Then again, if it were for my Grady Sizemore I would want the Indians to offer a 10 year contract so maybe I am not the best person to answer this question!

The owner is VERY cheap! If I were Santana,Mauer and Morneau,I would count on getting a new uniform in the near future.I heard (his name is Pohlad?) is tight as a drum with his cash.Don't expect the Twins to do much unless he wants to change his spending ways.

Simply because 5 years is a long time. No telling if someone is going to get injured. If he signs the 3 years and does well, they will invite him back to play. I think too much emphysis is put on how long the contract is.

Because he wants 15 million a year and the Twins would rather resign Johan.

I think Hunter wants to explore the market a little bit before signing with any team.
