Where there are any number of respected living philosophers (link 1), my definition of fame is perhaps a bit more stringent. I don't generally consider someone famous unless I can walk up to a random person, mention such a person, and get something other than a blank stare.

For philosophers, the only one who seems to pass this test with any regularity is Noam Chomsky. It's surprising sometimes how little filters down to the 'man on the street'.

Daisaku Ikeda is the most decorated philosopher in the world. He gets blanked out in the USA because our government and media cowtow to the Japanese government. Ikeda's philosophy is that all humans are equal in their capacity to reveal their enlightenment and to win in life, just as they are. That doesn't sit well with societies based on elitism.

Since much of philosophy deals with epistemology, and linguistics and experimental psychology are delving deeply into that, plus the new work on mirror neurons with interpretations of the behavioral implications, make some of these scientists the more significant philosophers, if you like things that matter.
