Start at http://www.download.com
In the Search Box, type Anti-virus and hit the GO button.
From the Search Results, scroll down to the "ALL Licenses" drop down menu and pick "FREE" Then click the FILTER button.
Click where it says "RATINGS CNET Editors" so you see the BEST ONES appear first. Try those.
Do the same thing for "Anti-Spyware".
But look for SpyBot Search & Destroy. That is one of my favorites. It's free.
If you are using Windows XP with SP2, then you can use the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender that comes with. Get this from Windows Updates.
You should have several FREE programs, and run scans regularly. You can have more than one Anti-virus program, but keep only one active at a time, since they might compete with each other in a horrible way.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Two programs.. an antivirus and a firewall.
For the antivirus I recommend AVG.. it will not stand up to serious threats out there like a trojan or a worm, but it holds its own. Either that or Norton Antivirus 2007, I recommend that highly above AVG.
For the firewall, ZoneAlarm Pro. One of the top best firewalls in the world right now. You can find both of these at download.com

www.ccleaner.com works great to clean up your system and check for errors. Otherwise, there are trial versions of Norton you can download for the time being. Other scanners you may like to try include: http://www.filehippo.com/download_kaspersky_antivir/
