thank you for your answers, they are really helpful.

more information:
the place i investigate is in the subtropics, around Tokyo, in here the earth will not frozen;
and actually i need settle a sensor underground 3 meters. and this sensor can only works within 10 degrees centigrade to 30 degrees centigrade.
so i need to know the temperature range in there, to make sure my sensor is still working within that range.

Loren's SHOUTED answer is somewhat in the right. In most places there is a certain depth where the temperature is the same as the average annual temperature at the surface, and it usually isn't very deep (it isn't like 100 meters, it's more like 5 or 10). Above this level the soil temperature is warmer than the annual average in summer and colder in winter. Of course the extent of variation is more marked the closer to the surface one looks.

This is why basements seem cool in the summer; the surrounding ground hasn't warmed significantly.

I do believe that three meters is inadequately deep to prevent variations on the order of several degrees over the course of the year. But I would have to look this up.There are a lot of factors that can be an influence.

NOT ENOUGH INFORMATION. AT 9 FEET DEEP THE GROUND WILL BE FROZEN IN SOME AREAS AND NOT IN OTHERS. THE FROST LINE HERE IN ARKANSAS IS ABOUT 1 AND 1/2 TO 2 FEET BUT IN SIBERIA IT MAY BE 12 FEET.
