Roger Maris. His 275th and final HR.

There was no NL Central in 1968.

On 15-Sept, the Cardinals were in Houston. Top of the third, trailing 2-1, Maris hit... well, this is a rather good inning, as every name is familiar, and it's not very long, so let's just run through the whole thing.

Brock (HOF) popped out.
Flood singled to CF.
Maris homered to RF (2 runs), Cards lead 3-2.
Cepeda (HOF) struck out.
McCarver (legendary blowhard) grounded out, 4-3.

All off Astros starter Don Wilson, who years later took his own life, and in support of HOFer Steve Carlton.

Maris' HR gave the Cardinals the lead which was never relinquished, although those were not the ultimately decisive runs; the final, Cardinals 7 - Astros 4.

It was the last HR of Maris' career (no, he didn't go long in the World Series that year, either).

In 1968 there wasn't an NL Central division. There was just an American and National League. In 1969 they expanded to East and West Divisions. There wasn't a Cental division until 1994 when they expanded the playoffs to included a wildcard.

No one. Divisions within the leagues did not exist until 1969. Furthermore, the National League Central did not exist until 1994.

There was no NL Central in 1968. There was no NL East or West either. Divison play started in 1969, and three divisions began in 1993.

Maris is correct, though. Great ballplayer.
