been there - first of all do not stop looking for jobs, especially now with the holidaze just ahead. the Salvation Army in your local area could help with both things - yeah i know it sounds weird but like i said been there - they start their "Bell ringer program", which the pay hourly rate for and have safe drivers drop you off at site and pick you up. my daughter as an adult has worked the Bell Ringer thing cause she thought it would be fun - she did enjoy it and they will help with gifts and food vouchers, some times even a tree. they will have access to clothing most likely too- so the kids can have coats. Seriously! the Salvation Army helped my family, more than once. my husband has cancer and couldn't work a few times when the kids were small - SO - i remember the kids got a huge garbage bag full of gifts according to their age and sizes. it was pretty great, the kids loved it. Anyway you can also try local churches, even if you don't attend they sometimes have programs for folks who need help during the holidaze. hope this helps - the best to you and your family , an ever well wisher :)

I'm sorry to hear you've lost your job and with the holidays around the corner none the less. You should first inform yourself if there's anything you can do about the way you were fired. I mean getting fired just because you stayed with your sick child one day doesn't sound right. About the coat, I don't know what organizations are available in your area. But you can inform yourself at your local church they usually have programs designed specially for those in need around the holidays. Best of luck!

Lots of places hire seasonal workers. Try applying at Walmart or K-mart, Target, etc. The best thing is the employee discount.
Also, contact area churches, Salvatian Army, school counselors, etc. about help with Thanksgiving, Christmas and for the coats.
I wish you and your family the best.
(((hugs)))

The suggestion for Christmas seasonal work is a great one. I would add signing up with a temporary employment agency as many office workers will be taking time off for the holidays. If you have the office skills, temp work is a good way to get your foot in the door at a new job. Many temp jobs turn in to full-time permanent if you show the skills and capabilities to do their work.
As for Christmas for your kids, don't be too proud to accept the charity being given out by non-profit groups and churches. You are the very person those groups donate to. If you are not affiliated with any church, take some time to check out and join a good group and participate in their holiday activities. Explain to your pastor or women's auxillary leader your financial need, and they will do their best to send you the right help you need. Be willing to trade volunteer time and help out. Many times volunteers who work at the church rummage sales are allowed to pick through the donations and trade volunteer time working the sale in exchange for the items you need.
Participate in community events. Take your kids to local Christmas programs around your town. Some high school choirs and orchestras have fantastic winter programs. Pull out your newspaper and post the weekly calendar of events and start planning to attend free activities. Your kids may remember this as the worst Christmas if you focus on what you don't have, or they may remember this as the best Christmas if you focus on participating in the festivities. I don't remember each and every Christmas gift I received, but I do remember the years I was in my high school band and choir and sang and played at Christmas festivities around town. I remember some terrific church socials and potluck dinners through the years. I remember going to "The Festival of the Trees" at the hospital where my mother worked and seeing all of the beautifully decorated trees up for charity auction. I remember going to the marina for the Christmas Boat Parades. Now my daughter has memories of our small-town's Christmas parades and coming home with bags full of the candy each entry handed out!
And it's true about the saying "the more you give, the more you receive." We have been helping rescue clothes thrown away in the garbage (apartment managers throw away whatever is left behind in apartments after people move) - we collect the items and donate the items to thrift stores and families in need. We also help our neighbors when they move and collect items they don't want, clean them up and sell them at yard sales or donate to rummage sales. As a result, my daughter now has tons of free clothes for the next five years stored away in her closet and dresser, and the more we give away, the more we keep finding and collecting.
Don't give up hope just because you lost a job due to the stupidity of one bad employer. Why not sign up with a temp agency or sign up to work at your favorite store instead? Turn your problems into challenges, and make an effort to do something different for Christmas this year instead of sitting around moping. Your kids will remember those church suppers and good hot chocolate at the Christmas plays, I guarantee you.
Happy Holidays and God Bless.
