As an active (middle-aged) C&W musician (bassist,) I, along with virtually every older C&W fan, think that Merle is perhaps the most influential (and equally talented) Writer/Vocalist that country music has ever spawned.
My fondest moment was actually meeting the man a long time ago at a (now defunct) club that was one of the biggest country venues outside of Nashville - The Palamino, in North Hollywood, CA.
Despite Merle's reputation as a heavy drinker, which is true, he was not only firendly -but- entirley sober at the time. That brieg 10-15 minute conversation (with others attending) is one of hight points in my career as a sideman.
Aside from his brilliant writing and "solid" baritone voice.........Merle is also a pretty fair fiddle player - particulalry when playing western swing.

My first memory was when I met him in th 1960's and he was just getting started. My favorite memory is when I last saw him a few years ago and we got to spend some time visiting. He and I talked about Tommy and his love for him as well as other things that were going on. He was very nice and cordial to me. Myself and some of my friends were his special guests at that show. Merle is one of the most interesting people I have ever met and he is straightforward and honest. If you don't want to know about how he feels about something then don't ask him because he will tell you exactly how he feels about it. He is one of the true legends in country music.

Well, I certainly can't top anything that's already been said by his most avid fans! So, I'll just say, you're as good as they get! When classical country is defined, your name will always be right on top for me!
