50 cm^3 of ethene gas diffused through a porous pot in 30 seconds at room temperature. How long will 25 cm^3 of nitrogen take to diffuse through the pot at 60 °C ?

(1) 20 s
(2) 30 s
(3) 40 s
(4) 50 s

The answer is (1) 20 s...I don't understand...please show me your workings and explain..thanks lots

Compare the diffusion of nitrogen with the diffusion of the ethene.

There is less nitrogen

The molecules have higher kinetic energy (higher temperature)

The nitrogen molecules have near enough the same mass as the ethene molecules, so that won't make any difference.

So we have one neutral change, and two changes that will make the diffusion of nitrogen take less time. So the only possible answer out of those you are offered is (1).

Something is wrong with the question as you have asked it. The 25 cm^3 nitrogen would take 15 s at room temperature, since there is only half as much stuff as 50 cm^3 ethene, so at higher temperature they should take even less than 15 s, but this is not offered as an option.
