When Kakashi was younger, he was team mates with a Uchiha Obito and a medical ninja named Rin. Kakashi recently became a jounin and everybody had presents for him exept Obito. They went on a mission, and Rin got caught by a shinobi so Kakashi and Obito had to go rescue her. On their way to get Rin back, a ninja slashes Kakashi's left eye (the scar) which makes him blind and loses his eye. They are able to save Rin with Obito's Sharingan and thenafter they run out of the cave that they were in, but it collapses and was about to kill Kakashi. Obito jumped in the way and pushed Kakashi aside, therefor he was crushed by a giant boulder. The boulder took out his whole right body including half of his face, arm, leg etc. Obito said that since he didn't give Kakashi a present, and Kakashi was always his bestfriend, and how he was going to die, he would give Kakashi his Sharingan to replace his damaged left eye. So Rin followed Obito's instructions and amputated Obitos left eye and implanted it into Kakashi. But because it was a transplant and Kakashi is not originally from the Uchiha clan, Kakashi cannot fully master the Sharingan like Itachi and it consumes more chakra than usual.

If you are wondering how Kakashi got the Mangekyou Sharingan without killing his best friend, that story (it is in the Naruto manga. It is called Kakashi Gaiden) explains it =)
Obito, Kakashi's BEST FRIEND, DIED and Rin IMPLANTED his Sharingan into Kakashi. Thus, Kakashi got it without literally killing Obito.

Sometimes Kakashi regrets what had happened and wishes he could changed what happened but..he knows he can't change the past but will always remember Obito =) <3

Kakashi lost his left eye as a result of taking an enemy ninja's attack for Obito. To protect Kakashi in return, Obito managed to awaken his Sharingan and killed their assailant. Soon after saving Rin, a rockfall technique was triggered and a rock struck Kakashi on his blind side. He would have been buried beneath the rocks had Obito not pushed Kakashi out of the way, getting the right side of his body almost completely crushed in the process. Shortly before he died, Obito had Rin (a medical ninja) implant his Sharingan eye in Kakashi's damaged eye socket as a gift. As his first act with his new eye, Kakashi avenged Obito by killing the enemy ninja with his now-perfected Chidori technique, bringing the Kakashi of today into being.and its sharingan not shaingan...

His teammate, Obito Uchiha, aquired his sharingan during a deadly mission, but was crushed by a giantic bolder, so his other teammate, Rin, (who was a medic nin) took out one of Obito's eyes (because Kakashi's was injured during enemy attack) at his request and gave Kakashi the Sharingan. He can never turn it off, however, because he does not posses the correct Kekkei Genkai so that is why he wears a forehead protecter over his eye and keeps it closed, because it doesn't waste his chakra that much that way.

Kakashi's Sharingan was a present from his team mate, Uchiha Obito, due to his promotion as a Jounin.

In the Kakashi Gaiden manga (Naruto chapters 239 - 244), Team Yondaime (Yondaime, Kakashi, Obito and a female member Rin) were assigned in a mission in a war against the Rock nins. Since it was also the day of Kakashi's promotion as a Jounin, everyone were to give presents except Obito, who was late and apparently had forgotten about it. But that time, Obito hadn't activated his Sharingan.

The team were split into 2 - Yondaime moved alone while the others were in a team - and were assigned to do their jobs the next morning. Before that, Kakashi and Obito had a quarrel about shinobi rules and later, Yondaime told Obito about Kakashi's reasonings to obey the shinobi rules - Kakashi's father once disobeyed the rules and chose to save his comrades and not finish his mission, causing Konoha to suffer a great loss. Ashamed and dishonored, Kakashi's father Hatake Sakumo killed himself.

The team split the next morning and Team Kakashi went to do their job. However, when Rin was captured by the enemy nin, Kakashi chose to continue the mission without Rin while Obito wanted to rescue her. They had another quarrel, in which Obito spoke a famous phrase Kakashi said to Team 7: "People who don't follow the rules are trash, but those who don't value a comrade's life are worse than trash." Kakashi was shocked to hear it, especially when he learned that Obito knew his history, but both went different way anyways.

Finally Kakashi came into rescue when Obito was attacked when he was trying to save Rin. In the fight, Kakashi lost his left eye from a slash of a kunai. Obito, wanted to save Kakashi who had just lost his eye, activated his Sharingan for the first time and finally managed to save Rin. However, the Rock nin gave a deadly blow by collapsing the cave they were in......

This is when Obito shines - he pushed Kakashi aside from the rocks that fell over him (he was hit by one when he tried to escape due to his felt eye's blindness) and got hit by a big boulder. Obito's left half of his body was crushed, and before he died, Obito gave his still activated left Sharingan to Kakashi as a present. Rin performed the implantation surgery, and Kakashi had a new eye, one that was given by his rival aka his best friend.

And the rest is history. Kakashi showed his Raikiri for the first time back then (before Obito activated his Sharingan), but was incomplete due to the fact that he couldn't see movements properly since it was too fast. But with Obito's Sharingan, Kakashi was able to perfect that jutsu.

I did say that the rest is history, right? :)

It happened in Kakashi Gaiden, the series in between Naruto and Naruto Shippuuden. Rin got captured by these rock ninja. When obito uchiha and kakashi went to save her, obito got crushed by rocks. His dying wish was for rin to transplant his eye into kakashi (because kakashi's original eye was damaged). Which is just what she did because she was a medical ninja. Did i mention who there sensei was, oh no i didn't it was Minato Namikaze, aka fourth hokage, aka naruto's father.

It's all described in Kakashi Gaiden. He recieved it from his team member, Obito Uchiha, who had just activated his sharingan before being crushed by a boulder. Before he dies, he decides to give Kakashi his eye because he failed to give him a gift for becoming a Jounin. Their team memeber, Rin, performs the procedure. Kakashi had lost his left eye earlier in the mission protecting Obito and this is also a way for Obito to atone for that.
