I just bought him this game he wanted. Brand new game purchased at WalMart. He put it in his PS2 and after a few minutes got the message "Disc Read Error". He has numerous other games, some old, some new, and all of them work just fine in his PS2. Any ideas what could be wrong? Suggestions? Advice?

Hi,
Before you do anything that I've suggested to do to fix the problem, take the game back to Wal-Mart, and tell them what's happening, and that maybe you could get another copy. Because it's possible that you could have baught a defective game. If you get the new copy, try it on the Ps2 again, and if it still doesn't work, try the following:
I recommend purchasing a CD Lense Cleaner Disc from Wal-mart, or a local department store, for about $8-$10. They'll work on CD ROM's, DVD players, and on Ps2's also. If that still doesn't work, and the disc read error still is occuring, I suggest you might try this too:
Remove the cover off your Ps2. Be careful not to pull the case too far from the Ps2 because there is a wire that runs from your on-and-off button, to your internal peices of your Playstation. Once that's off, then you can remove the cover off the CD ROM drive. Then you can see the laser eye. Take a q-tip, and lightly swab the eye of the laser with alcohol to remove the dust (which is causing the disc read error).
Good luck, and I hope I've helped.

There are a number of reasons this could be...
1. Laser's tolerance level is too low.
2. Disk is poorly balanced/scratched.
3. PS2's internals are dusty/drive is partly obscured by dust/dirt.

My advice would be to start with the easiest item to work on.
Look at the disk, and look for warps in the coating, scratches... and irregularity in it.
If you don't see any, if it is possible, try to find someone else with a PS2, and see if they can play the game.

If no, we have isolated the fault to the disk. Return it to walmart for another copy.

If yes, that we have reason to beleive that it may be your unit.

Now, if this is the case, how long have you had this PS2? If it's under a year... call Sony. Your warranty is still in force, and let them deal with the repair.

If no, it's time to open the system.

It is some thing in the game. The only thing you can try to do is take it back to the store
