Most pay sites will display a pay pale or it will say subscription. But if they don't then when you try to download an item a pay pale thingy will appear. There is a site such as the Sims2 resource which has both free and subscription stuff on there site. This is what i suggest when you download an item make sure to download the the mesh first as sometimes the recolour will be free but then there will be a link to a site where you can download the mesh and sometimes the mesh is subscription and that is very inconvenient.Because now you have the recolour but no mesh and without the mesh the item will not show up in the game. Paysites must be destroyed!

It's free if they don't prompt you for your credit card information or a username and password. With that in mind, some sites require you to register in order to access their downloads (like http://www.modthesims2.com due to spammers), but they're still free. Most sites will tell you on their main page if they're pay; if they don't say anything, assume they're free.
