we do it after halloween but before thanksgiving because by the time thanksgiving rolls around there is snow on the ground and its a little difficult to get them up when there is snow all over the area ur putting the lights and decorations up on. not to mention we use those little blow up decoration and they need to be put into the ground so y do people make a big deal out of putting them up this early obviously if they r doing it there is a reason for it right

Stores decorate early because shoppers buy early. If buyers quit buying for Christmas in September/October, stores will not put up their displays in September/October.
The good news is, October holiday sales are down, so look for late season discounts.
Now, why do I start putting up Christmas decorations in October/November? Because I have a ton of lights. I have found that many people enjoy the FREE gift of being able to drive around and look at holiday lights. So, in an effort to assist others in CHEAP FREE entertainment (for them), I put out a lot of lights.
I too, take advantage of the warmer weather for the purpose of installing decorations.
I will not, however, light up until December 1st, though there are many that light up after Thanksgiving.

I have a couple of reason for not liking Christmas lights out too early and by too early I mean before Dec.1st. I’m ok with them putting them up the weekend of Thanksgiving. That’s when most folks have the time off work to do it. I really don’t like the stores setting up so early. Here are my reasons.
1. Stress is a big one. I start stressing out over what to get everyone. 2. Thanksgiving gets overlooked and I feel it’s important to give thanks for all we have. 3. I love Fall and don’t like it getting rushed into Winter. 4. I hate the commercializing of a holy day. How many people celebrate Christmas, but don’t go to church. It’s hypocritical to me.
I put up decorations in the home and a fake tree with lights in the house. I also put out a Yule log. We don’t put lights outside anymore and everything comes down Jan. 1st.
I don't know where you live, but we live in Michigan and there is usually no snow on the ground before December.

Because it has kind of diminished the Holiday Spirit for
Halloween and Thanksgiving when all the stores put up/out
all their Christmas stuff in September or earlier. And then
barely make an effort to put out decorations for Halloween
and Thanksgiving. I would say your ok with doing your
decorations when you know its easier (safer) to do it before
a snow. But for me its not people its the stores that ruin
the Holiday Spirit. They could/should at least give a little
more effort to celebrate Thanksgiving.

At home is one thing, thats fine. But the retailers should at least let one holiday get over before the next starts. I love the holiday season all of it. But Christmas music was playing the day after Halloween and a lot of the trees and decorations were up before Halloween was here. This year they seem even more pushy than usual. When I was a kid the Christmas season started the week of Thanksgiving and things felt exciting. Now its all about who can get the all mighty dollar
the earliest.

You are right but what about the area's that don't get snow before Thanksgiving? (do you take them down in the snow or leave them up all winter). In my area stores have decorated early to get the idea in your head that christmas is on its way and you need to start shopping now. Its a marketing ploy which stresses people out about a holiday and makes them really sick of Christmas music way before December.

I don't mind when people start decorating early. What cracks me up is the stores around here start putting Holiday things (trees, lights, wreathes, ornaments) out in August.
I think it makes sense to go ahead and put the Christmas lights up before it gets extremely cold and snowy. But those who turn them on and it's only the middle of October??? That's kind of silly to me.
I'm still waiting for the Christmas music to begin.

I do not think christmas decorations should go up and turned on untill after Thanksgiving. If it is being put up before then because its alot to put out fine, just don't turn them on other than to test them. My thought is this for people and stores who put christmas decorations out and begin the celebration before Thanksgiving is this: Let's be greedy and forget about being Thankful
