The First Ku Klux Klan

The Ku Klux Klan (KKK), was organized in Pulaski, Tennessee during the winter of 1865-1866 by six former Confederate Army Officers.

Although the Ku Klux Klan began as a fraternal organization, its activities soon were directed against the Republican Reconstruction governments and their leaders, both black and white, who came into power in the southern states after the Civil War.

A confederate general, Nathan Bedford Forest was the Klan's first leader and was titled the 'Grand Wizard'. The group adopted the name from the Greek word 'kuklos' meaning circle and the English word 'clan'.

The Second Ku Klux Klan

The second Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1915 by William J. Simmons, an ex-minister and promoter of fraternal orders; its first meeting was held on Stone Mt., Ga. The new Klan had a wider program than its forerunner, for it added to “white supremacy” an intense nativism and anti-Catholicism (it was also anti-Semitic) closely related to that of the Know-Nothing movement of the middle 19th cent.

The "Wizard of the Saddle" Nathan Bedford Forrest wanted to move on to more something a little more ambitious - and he became the first "Grand Wizard of the Empire" in 1865.

From fighting the Union army Forrest and his fellow Confederate veterans moved on to keeping African-Americans away from the polls with the threat of violence.

It was the brainchild of the conservatives at that time. Many modern conservatives (Republicans and some Democrats) have parents or grandparents who were members of the KKK

The KKK started in Illinois In the late 1800s or early 1900s. (And for those of you who don't believe me then you need to get on the internet and look it up!) It was a group of bored white men who had nothing better to do than make themselves look more surperior than those of a different race.
