I think that he is NOT a great consolation prize, yes he has put up some numbers but he is eating himself out of third base, he is not a great clubhouse guy, he is eating himself out of third base...did I mention that he is eating himself out of thrid base? His range is disappearing right now and while he still has power and a decent average he is no longer the speed guy that he was coming into the league. WIth his weight he is no longer an option in the Outfield either. If I were a contender I would be weary of him right now. There are too many question marks on his future, if you are looking short term and hope that your staff can get his weight back down and under control then he may be worth the risk but so far nothing has been able to convince him that he needs to drop weight...he was fined several times for his weight in the past two seasons.

I think the "baggage" would warrant further investigation before thinking about signing a longterm deal worth that much money plus giving up prime prospects and/or veterans. I read the Marlins want three high level low cost players for Cabrera. I seriously don't know. With Arod's poor performances in the postseason I might lean more towards Cabrera but then again, Arod may create new baseball history so it'd be a toss up. Cabrera's weight (ala Bartolo Colon) would also be a concern. And yes, I know Colon is a pitcher but weight could also negatively impact a position player as well.

Cabrera probably is a good alternative but he won't put up the numbers that A-Rod would... that being said, the team would probably have a better shot at making the WS with Cabrera than with A-Rod...
The Marlins know that Cabrera is a fallback for teams that don't get or lose out on A-Rod and so they are able to set the terms of any trade possibility... their demands for the players they get for Cabrera might be too high, they may need to lower them a tiny bit...

Have to agree w/ the previous answer. Cabrera's Baggage needs to be looked into first. Also, what makes you think that 120 million over 10 years will be acceptable to Cabrera? that only averages out to 12 million a year. Try something like 100 million over 5 yrs after his 2 yrs arbitration is finished.

It's been said that Miguel Cabrera has gained close to 75 pounds since his rookie season.
He's also had a tendency to show up late for games, and is quite possibly the most defensively-challenged player in the league today.
Cabrera over Rodriguez any day? Heh, good luck with that one...
He certainly can hit, but until he even begins to show so much as a modicum of maturity, the risk factor is too strong to provide that kind of financial commitment.

hes not a better alternative, but he is a good one
cabrera has put up some really good numbers, but lets remember, he hasnt put up arod numbers, and he doesnt have the experience, he is also a defensive downgrade from arod
arod and cabrera are a wash when it comes to attitude
and any trade that brings cabrera in is going to cost a lot of talent

Yes, Miguel Cabrera should get a bigger contract than ARod, but he won't ask for it because he is not as greedy and think for the better good of the team.
Much younger, equal if not greater upside should logically worth more $$$.

Yes because he's younger and can hit and is a good infielder and wants a world series championship and a-rod to but dosent show it in the postseason and Miguel cabera can show it and a Yankee fan to death and they also want Johan Santana which they have a chance he can go the Yankees or Mets.
