Because it is more important to women that they be liked. They make the effort to be friendly, pleasant and approachable.
Most guys, by comparison, don't care that much what other people think. They don't necessarily try to annoy people, but they do what they want regardless.

Fantastic question! Socio-biologists, (those who study the social groups of animals, human and otherwise) have found that female primates just care more about maintaining good relationships.
This is a survival technique, as humans and chimps as well naturally depend on the "community" more when caring for infants. So women have developed more sensitive systems in regards to "reading" others and knowing when a smile can help smooth things over in a relationship.
It may not be very romantic, but female primates are just built that way. :-)

A lot of men just couldn't care less. LOL, then u've got the ego MANiacs, who are conscious of appearance and smile, but judge themselves too important for it to matter.

I usually have a neutral expression when I go about my business. Some say that smiling can be construed as either happiness or submissiveness. If the lips are naturally tilted up, people might perceive you as happier, if they naturally turn downward you may come off as a sourpuss. Those are my thoughts! :)
