I never (before) thought of myself as xenophobic, but living in the United States and occasionally visiting friends in Europe, I don't see much good coming from the increased Muslim presence in the West. They don't seem to fully assimilate with the existing culture and require that the culture accommodate them in ways that are displeasing. It's probably way to late, but the more the West discourages Muslim integration, the better. And if Turkey is admitted to the EU, all controls are gone.

Religion does not come into it, in my opinion, though there are many people who would disagree with me. (Hence your question, as it reflects the prevailing public opinion, not neccesarily yours. don't get me wrong.)
If Turkey was a European country, I would say, welcome. Great news.
Unfortunately, it is not a European country. It is an Asian country. (Admittedly Asia Minor, with a small rock in Europe) Therefore, by geography alone, it is automatically disqualified. I think a big hoo haa has been generated just because of Islam. This should not be allowed to cloud the issue. Let us look at Armenia, which isn't a Muslim country, but not that far from Europe. Geography, again, would preclude it from EU membership.
My thought is.... Let us look at Europe. What does Europe mean? Where is Europe, and where should it stop? If Turkey qualifies due to a small rock, what about Russia? European Russia and Asian Russia, and so on. If Asian Russia is part of the EU, ... a can of worms... a line has to be drawn somewhere. I'll be here all night typing, but I'll stop.
If Turkey was European, My response is WELCOME! Turkey isn't European. So, how about associate membership, at least, to acknowledge historical links with Europe?
I love your question. I'll discuss this with friends!

At the least it should be delayed as the EU is becoming too cumbersome. The EU has too many problems caused by the East European expansion.

Until those problems are sorted out any further expansion of the EU should be put on hold. Having said that Turkey could be prove to be a useful bridge between Europe and the Muslim world.

as a resident of the city of leicester where the indigenous population is already in a minority we have no say in the continuing influx of muslim immigrants,if we complain we are accused of being racist,ie we are being gagged, a combination of the local council, the local newspaper, and the local radio station tell us everything in the garden is rosy, not in my experience it is most definetly not, mosques are springing up everywhere (what happened to planning permission) muslims have an inordinate ammount of power in this city, sharia law is already becoming a strong posibility within a few years, the exclusion of non muslims from having a real say in the future of this city will be detrimental to muslims and non muslims alike, as to a sudden influx of turkish muslims ,I would welcome them, we need an antithesis to the extreme views of these petty little sawdust hitlers in our midst at the moment, of course these few lines of thought will have the politically correct brigade extoling their own extreme views, so be it, I refuse to remain silent

Not good. Our cultures will have to change for them. It's like Canada , used to be a Christian country minding its own business and then Trudeau let in all kinds of refugees and immigrants. It's fnd to help people out, but when they change your society to their own liking after you generosity -- its terrible.

Peace,
