Mark: Yeah I heard of COBRA, is there anything like COBRA but that you or me could actually join as a coordination Officer or some such?

Yes - there is the International Rescue Corps. (Nothing to do with the puppet series and Film). We had a talk from two of their members last month at our club. They are all volunteers and trained at their own expense and in their own time - takes 12 months - no previous experience necessary - wouldn't mind doing it myself but getting a bit long in the tooth!. They go abroad to earthquakes etc and have IR imaging to find bodies etc. Check out their website - sorry - not sure of its address/

COBRA is the government committee who oversee such things, but it's the emergency services who deal with the actual event.

There's Raynet - a group of licenced radio hams who work closely with the services in disaster/emergency situations, mainly with communications.
