They place these signs at various points (mostly on rural roads with wooded areas nearby) because these are the "usual" places that deer cross the road. They're really just a "heads-up" to drivers, letting them know that there is a possibility that deer can come out of nowhere..right in front of them.

So the deer know where to cross the road. hehehehe. Okay seriously though. They place these signs so that motorist know that their is a higher probability of deers crossing the road at this location. I liked my first answer better though lol

It's not so the deer know where to cross - it's so you know where the deer cross. You don't want to hit them, do you? I can assure you that it would be as unpleasant for you as it would be for the deer.
They usually put the signs up wherever deer tend to roam.

Because if your like going 60mph on a road and you see a deer crossing sign they'll hope you'll be more cautious especially at night so you don't do 60mph and bash youur car head on into a deer and have your head go through the windshield and your passenger fly's head first through the windshield landing 20 feet away on his/her head dying upon impact.

To warn you that deer may leap into your path. I plowed my car into a small herd of deer once. There was no 'deer crossing' sign in the area though.

Ya me to, because I see more deer when your not being warned there are deer ahead.
But they mostly put those deer crossing signs at places, were your not aloud to hunt. So they should be heavy populated in that area, since you cant shot them there.

Its to let you know that deer cross the road at that spot and to slow down so that you wont hit them and wreck your car. They can damage a car badly. You wouldn't think so, but they can.
